After reading Edith Wharton's piece, i was fascinated by her story, because her ancestors, who I've already had prior knowledge on, were actually historical figures who had defended colonial New York as early as the 1700s. In her story, she went into describing the way things were and the middle class people who occupied the colony, which is now a state today. Although her story was a bit informative, it was exactly what the title stated, "The Background." Like the author mentioned, "New York was a commercial community and the citizens upheld two standards of importance, that of education and good manners, and the other of scrupulous probity in business and private affairs." Although those standards are still upheld today, New York has undergone many drastic changes due to the shrink in responsibility and i thought Wharton did a great job with associating her genealogy to events for readers to have a better understanding of what it was like back then.
